Lost Lantern – Shadow & Light

Our collaboration with Lost Lantern was born out of our second film, Independent Spirits – A Whisky Film, a focus on independent bottlers… but this one was bone on our home soil.

WHISKEY AND A SHOW

Lost Lantern created this special limited-edition release for ‘Independent Spirits – A Whiskey Series.’ This docuseries, from the producers of the film The Water of Life, celebrates the history and future of independent bottlers around the world, from their origins in Scotland two centuries ago to the new and innovative forms they’re taking today. As the first fully transparent independent bottler of American whiskey, we are proud both to be featured in the series and to be part of this worldwide tradition.

This whiskey is a follow-up to two of our award-winning blended malts: Flame, an American mesquite-smoked blended malt, and Shadow, an American peated blended malt. Those releases explored the flavors of mesquite and peat through an American context, but separately. This release embraces both at the same time. It is an homage to the new and the old: it brings together an American take on one of the oldest types of whiskey in the world, peated single malt, with a new tradition, mesquite-smoked single malt from the Southwestern United States. These come together to create a whiskey that is warm and bright and cool and dark all at once.

Smoked whiskies take many forms. This one is a billowing bonfire.

Sacks Dynamic Operations – The Octave Project

Small Barrels. Big Character.

The Octave Project explores how small barrels can shape whisky in bold and unexpected ways. Using octave casks, smaller than traditional barrels, these whiskies mature with increased surface contact between spirit and wood, resulting in amplified texture, layered flavor, and distinctive character.

Developed in collaboration with Independent Spirits, this project focuses on experimentation with intent. Each octave is selected for balance and depth, showing how careful cask management can enhance complexity without overwhelming the whisky.

These are limited releases, bottled in small quantities of 120 bottles or less per octave, and offered exactly as they were tasted. No chill filtration, no added color, and no proofing down.

Director Greg Swartz explains the project to the Seattle chapter of the Drammers. (VIDEO)

Octave Project Bottlings (Technical Attributes)

  • Craigellachie 11yo “Mother Cask” (350 ml) – Speyside single malt matured from the original mother barrel with part reracked to octaves, bottled at cask strength of 64.3% ABV in a limited outturn of 118 bottles.  This is the reference.
  • Craigellachie 11yo “Ex-Bourbon” Octave (350 ml) – Same 11-year Speyside single malt finished in ex-bourbon octave casks for intensified notes of vanilla and caramel from the wood-spirit interaction, cask strength, non-chill-filtered at 63.7% ABV in a limited release of 120 bottles.
  • Craigellachie 11yo “Ex-Rye” Octave (350 ml) – Identical base malt but finished in ex-rye octave casks for a spicier wood influence, bottled at cask strength of 64.7% ABV in a very limited 119 bottle release.
